Cubs’ First Strike in Mayabeque

The Holguin Cubs used their traditional grit to overturn a deficit and, in the final stretch of the game. Tie the game and then decide it with a 10-9 score against the Mayabeque Hurricanes at their Nelson Fernández Park.

Holguin starter Carlos Santiesteban didn’t perform with his usual dominance, and when he left the mound after five innings of action, the home team’s lead was 7-1. Although Santiesteban endured seven hits, two of the runs allowed were unearned.

In the seventh inning, the Holguin Cubs scored three times, two of them driven in by Yasiel González’s double (5-2, 2 RBIs). They closed the score to 7-5 and exploited starter Alyanser Álvarez. Who left the pitching line with seven hits and three earned runs.

The other two runs in that inning came off Duvier Peña, who got two outs, with the last one coming off left-hander Geyler Gracial.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Hurricanes scored a run off leadoff reliever Jesús Quintán (2.0 ERA, 1 H, 1 RBI, 1 ER) to make it 8-5.

The Mayabeque team opened the eighth with Adrián Sosa in the box, who endured consecutive hits from Edward Magaña (2-5, RBI) and pinch-hitter Cristian Arévalo. Carlos Barrabí Jr. then entered the game, replacing Adriel Hechavarría, who hit a home run to left field to tie the game.

There, Mayabeque’s top manager, Osmel Cordero, turned to Marlon Vega again, who managed to get three outs, although he endured a hit. However, in the ninth, he issued three walks and allowed a double from Ernesto Torres (6-2, 2 2B, 2 RBI). Which brought two homers and made the score 10-8.

For Holguin, Michel Cabrera (6-1) got a scoreless in the eighth. Although he was hit by a double. In the fifth, he issued a walk, allowed a single, and was called for an unearned run, but secured the victory. This Thursday, the Matanzas Crocodiles remained at the top of the baseball tournament with a 10-8 victory over the La Isla Pirates, after two consecutive losses.

The reigning champions, the Las Tunas Lumberjacks, remained in third place with a 2-1 victory over the Villa Clara Leopards at their Augusto César Sandino headquarters.
In the Latin American Championship, the Havana Industriales defeated the Guantanamo Indians 5-4 in eleven innings. Remaining tied for third place with the Tunas team and the Artemisa Hunters, who also defeated the Granma Alazanes 5-3.

At the Cándido González Stadium in Camagüey, the Toros of that province split the honors in their doubleheader with the Cienfuegos Elephants. The hosts won 6-3 in the first game, and the pachyderms took revenge in the second, triumphing 9-3.

The Vegueros of Pinar del Rio returned to their winning ways at their Capitán San Luis stadium by defeating the Gallos de Sancti Spiritus 4-3. Also while the game between the Santiago de Cuba Wasps and the Ciego de Avila Tigers was suspended due to inclement weather.

After Tuesday’s results, the standings in the top segment are as follows: Matanzas (25-13); Holguin (24-13, 0.5); Las Tunas, Artemisa, and Industriales (22-13, 1.5); Santiago (20-14, 3.0); Sancti Spiritus (21-17, 4.0) and Mayabeque (20-17, 4.5).
