With a 6-4 loss to the Mayabeque Hurricanes at Nelson Fernández Stadium, the Holguin Cubs saw their streak of seven consecutive wins in the 64th National Baseball Series snapped.
Holguin starter Jesús Enrique Pérez (1-3) was hit seven times in six innings. Allowing six runs, but only three earned, as Holguin’s defense committed five errors.
Although they were poor defensively, the Cubs must be acknowledged for their grit by tying the game in the sixth inning. Hitting five hits off starter and winner José Ignacio Bermúdez (1-2). One of them being Lázaro Cedeño’s (4-3, 2 RBI) tenth home run, and two doubles, including the RBI by Jorlis Bravo (3-3, 2 2B, 2 RBI).
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the eighth man in the Mayabeque lineup, Dairon López, decided the game with a three-run homer. Jesús Quintán didn’t allow a run in two innings, allowing four hits and striking out two batters.
The Holguin Cubs pulled one back in the eighth inning against Bermúdez. But newly added Marlon Vega didn’t allow any more vents in two innings to earn the save. Each team had eleven hits, but the winners played fair on defense.
On the same day, the Pirates of La Isla, at their home stadium in Cristóbal Labra. Revolted against the leader, Matanzas, winning 7-1 with a 12-hit attack.
Taking advantage of the losses to the Cocodrilos and Cachorros, the Las Tunas Lumberjacks and Havana Industriales teams won their respective games this Tuesday. Moving within a game and a half of the series lead.
In the Latinoamericano, the Industriales defeated the Guantanamo Indians 7-1. The victory went to Pavel Hernández (5-1). Who struck out eight batters in nine innings to total 61 and reaffirm his lead in that division.
As visitors, at the Augusto César Sandino Stadium, the Lumberjacks defeated the Villa Clara Leopards 2-1. Yosmel Garcés (4-0) displayed great dominance during six immaculate innings.
The Cienfuegos Elephants continued to push very close to the qualifying zone. Blanking the Camagüey Bulls 5-0 in their home arena at the Cándido González Stadium. At the Captain San Luis Stadium, the Pinar del Rio Vegueros continued their climb. By defeating the Sancti Spiritus Roosters 3-1, earning their fifth consecutive victory.
The match between Artemisa and Granma was suspended due to the referees’ failure to show up. Also the match between Santiago de Cuba and Ciego de Avila was not played in the José Ramón Cepero field due to the impact of rain.
