Delegation concludes participation in the National History Congress

The recent closing of the 26th National History Congress in the province of Las Tunas was an event that celebrated the most authentic aspects of Cuban culture. Highlighting the importance of deepening research and preserving heritage.

For several days, historians from across the country gathered, including a large delegation from Holguin. Creating a space where academic work was integrated with the community. Reaffirming Cuban historical memory and cultural identity.

Although the closing gala was presided over this Wednesday by Naima Trujillo Barreto, Minister of Education. October 16th was the official farewell of all delegations in the Vicente García Revolution Square in Las Tunas.

During the meeting, Holguin stood out as the province with the largest number of representatives. Sending a total of 16 delegates who presented more than 10 papers.

Dr. Paul Sarmiento Blanco, PhD in Historical Sciences and Director of the Center for Studies on Culture and Identity (CECI) at the University of Holguin. He expressed that the participation of the Holguin delegation was very beneficial. Both academically and in terms of exchanges with the population and educational institutions of several municipalities in Las Tunas.

He mentioned that during their visits to places such as Puerto Padre, Colombia, and Amancio, the Holguin delegation not only offered lectures. But also had the opportunity to learn about local traditions.

Sarmiento commented on the arduous preparation process for the congress. Which was dedicated to commemorating important historical milestones. Such as the 130th anniversary of the start of the Wars of Independence and the death in combat of José Martí.

Moreover he emphasized that, prior to the event, a provincial workshop was held where 23 papers were selected for presentation to the national commission. Ultimately achieving the approval of more than 10 projects, including two by history students.

The CECI director emphasized the importance of the interrelationship between the Union of Cuban Historians and the University of Holguin. In these types of events, as “it is traditional for the university to have a prominent participation in national congresses. Also which is recognized even at the level of the Ministry of Higher Education.”

During the congress, Holguin speakers presented innovative research. Among them, a study on slavery in Holguin in the 19th century by Dr. Alexander Abreu stood out. As well as research by Professor Hernel Pérez Concepción on the Cuban Communist Party in Holguin.

Additionally, Víctor Aguilera Nonell, first vice president of the Union of Cuban Historians in Holguin, presented a paper on the socioeconomic period of socialism in the province in the 1970s. While Dr. C. Leidiedis Góngora Cruz addressed the role of female figures in the history of Cuban diplomacy.

Looking to the future, Sarmiento indicated that it is now necessary to continue preparing to contribute new and interesting research for the 27th National History Congress. Which will be held in Guantanamo in 2027.
