Guantanamo Strengthens Its Lead in the Eastern Boxing Zone

Guantanamo defeated Santiago de Cuba 54 points to 24 today and, with a cumulative score of 148. Confirmed its lead in the Eastern Zone of the National Boxing Series. Which will be held at the Fernando de Dios Indoor Arena in the city of Holguin until next Friday.

The eight wins for Guaso’s boys went to Leordanis Matos (50 kg), Rolando Martínez (55 kg), Randy Tamayo (65 kg), Richard Colón (70 kg), Xavier Fernández (80 kg), Carlos Santos (85 kg), Joseph Denis (90 kg), and Eny Gell (+90 kg). While Santiago natives Luis Enrique Vinent (60 kg) and Raikol Leonard (75 kg) achieved the victory for their team.

For Martínez, Santos, and Gell, these were their third wins in the tournament. The same tally achieved by Granma native Fredisney Morales (90 kg), who won today in the 38-point tie between his team and Las Tunas. A day in which the hosts from Holguin were off.

Also scoring victories for Granma were Alexander Aguilar (50 kg), Fabián Vila (55 kg), Darián Lázaro (60 kg), and Adriel Martínez (+90 kg). Also while Iracel Parchement (65 kg), Yomeidis Santos (70 kg), Jonathan Núñez (75 kg), David Guerrero (80 kg), and Jason Hasting (85 kg) for Las Tunas.

The Guaso boxers are followed in the standings by Holguin, with 92 points. Granma, with 89; Santiago de Cuba, with 73, and Las Tunas, with 62.

This Thursday, on the penultimate day of the tournament, Las Tunas and Guantanamo will face off in the first match. Moreover while Holguin and Santiago de Cuba will compete in the final match, with a bye for the Granma squad.

If Guantanamo and Holguin win, they would practically secure their spots in this region for the national final.
