The United States of Fear

Long ago, during President Ronald Reagan’s administration, legal immigrants were always welcome in the United States of America. As he made clear during his final speech. But from Reagan’s time to Trump’s, the changes have been horrendous, to say the least.

What was surprising to me were the recent statements by the great Cuban singer Gloria Estefan. Who confessed that she is afraid to speak Spanish for fear of being deported in the United States.

Estefan was the special guest on the Spanish program El Hormiguero on October 2nd, 2025. During the interview, host Pablo Motos asked Estefan what it means to be Latina in the United States today. Ans during President Donald Trump’s second term.

According to HuffPost, Gloria Estefan remained silent for a moment and then replied: “I’m a little scared, to tell you the truth. I carry my passport just in case.”

The singer expressed her concern about the possibility of one day being arrested just because someone heard her speaking Spanish. Although she hopes something like that never happens.

Estefan explained that she supports enforcing the law and controlling illegal immigration. However, she believes the way immigrants are treated in the U.S. today is something she has never experienced in the country.

“Seeing the families they are separating, how they have mistreated many people. Throwing women to the ground in front of their children… That scares me,” Estefan shared.

This was not the first time Gloria Estefan shared her feelings about the Trump administration’s immigration policies. On July 22nd, 2025, the singer addressed the issue on journalist Jorge Ramos’s talk show.

In the conversation, Estefan admitted that she “no longer recognizes this country.” Because she hadn’t observed a political and social environment like this in the 65 years she has lived in the U.S.

“And look, I lived here during segregation. The horrors that African Americans experienced during that time. Trying to stand up to Martin Luther King. I was a child, but I saw everything,” the singer said. “I haven’t seen anything like this. It really scares me.”

Gloria Estefan added that she feels the current administration doesn’t respect the proper order of government divisions. Estefan explained that she is particularly concerned when she realizes that laws are not being followed as stipulated, she told host Jorge Ramos.

Immigration in the U.S. has become a recurring theme in Gloria Estefan’s appearances. On June 3rd, 2025, the artist appeared on the streaming platform Canela TV and took the opportunity to share an event she witnessed in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Estefan recounted that when they landed at the airport, the passengers weren’t allowed to leave the plane. When she looked out the window to see what was happening, she noticed a police officer at the gate.

“There was a woman, two rows behind me, with a baby. They took the baby from her hands,” she said. “The woman started crying, the baby started crying. They took the baby off the plane. Then more officers arrived and took the woman away.”

According to Gloria Estefan, when she finally got off the plane, she saw that authorities had put the baby in a vehicle. While his mother was far away and surrounded by police officers. For Estefan, there was no reason to separate this family. “We can’t forget to be humane at all times,” the singer emphasized.

The mistreatment of legal and illegal immigrants during raids in the United States. Based on the color of their skin or their inability to speak English, reminds me of George Orwell’s novel “1984.” Where a totalitarian society existed, one that was vigilant and repressive toward people and their behavior.

In the end, it’s sad to see how those who have worked in agriculture, construction, mining, or the most risky jobs that Americans dislike are discriminated against. Even though they contributed to the United States’s origins as the great power it once was. But they are no longer the case because China is already on the horizon as a future great economic power.

Poor immigrants: so far from God and living within the United States.
