Republic of Korea Announces Rice Donation to Cuba

The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Cuba, Lee Ho-Yul, reaffirmed this Monday his country’s willingness to deepen bilateral collaboration with Cuba in multiple areas.

During an event held in Havana for Korean National Day. Which coincided with the traditional Chuseok holiday. The diplomat thanked the Cuban authorities, the diplomatic corps, and the Korean community in the archipelago for their support in these initial months.

“I wish our countries an eternal, prosperous, and mutually beneficial friendship, to build together a bright future not only for our nations. But for humanity in general,” stated the ambassador, who emphasized: “This is just the beginning.”

As a concrete sign of cooperation, he announced a donation of rice intended to strengthen food security in Cuba.  Also managed in conjunction with the World Food Program (WFP).

He explained that the Asian nation also collaborates with the United Nations Children’s Fund on maternal and child nutrition programs. And with the World Health Organization in sending medical supplies to Cuba.

Lee Ho-Yul explained that since 2020, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KIA). And the WFP have been promoting projects in eastern Cuba to strengthen food supply systems. It was recently agreed to extend this initiative for another five years.

Moreover he specified that training is being provided in transportation, biopharmaceuticals, and civil engineering. Futhermore the exchange of knowledge in environmental management is being promoted. Especially in combating plastic pollution.

The ambassador announced that, in the coming months, both nations will work through the Inter-Ministry Political Consultation Mechanism. To negotiate an investment agreement and the possible creation of a joint economic commission.

Cultural cooperation is also being promoted through a memorandum of understanding between the National Library of the Republic of Korea and the José Martí National Library. As well as the formalization of Korean language teaching in Cuba.

“The Cuban people have immense potential. We are confident that, like Korea after the war. They will overcome their challenges and build a prosperous future,” he said.

During the event, tribute was also paid to the descendants of Koreans in Cuba. Also whose presence symbolizes decades of human ties between the two nations.
