World Space Week 2025 begins today, focused on educating, inspiring, and connecting the global community. Highlighting humanity’s progress in developing sustainable living solutions for space.
Until October 10th, there will be days of activities featuring debates, meetings, workshops, interactive sessions, student exchanges with experts, and exhibitions of groundbreaking advances in this field and key figures. All under this year’s theme: “Living in Space.”
October 4th commemorates the launch of humanity’s first satellite, Sputnik 1, in 1957.
October 10th also commemorates the signing of the Treaty, in 1967. On the principles governing the activities of States in the exploration and use of outer space. Including the Moon and other celestial bodies.
In its resolution 54/68 of December 6th, 1999, the UN General Assembly declared the period from October 4th to 10th as “World Space Week.” Also to annually celebrate internationally the contributions of space science and technology to improving the human condition.
This celebration is the world’s premier event related to space use and technology, according to the UN.
The theme “Living in Space” explores humanity’s journey to make it a habitat in 2025. Moreover highlighting innovative technologies, obstacles, and collaborative efforts that make this aspiration a reality.
The UN recognizes that advances in outer space have added a new dimension to human existence and opened up new possibilities for increasing knowledge and improving people’s lives.
Space technology is essential here in humanity’s fight against climate change. Futhermore as is the active role of space exploration in advancing human understanding and management of the Earth’s climate.
Topics will range from life support systems and space habitats to research on human adaptability and resource use in extraterrestrial environments.
