The First Workshop on Immunodeficiencies and Clinical Management of Patients with HIV/AIDS held this October 1st at the Octavio de la Concepción Pediatric Hospital.
According to Dr. Iliana Hernández Ramírez, an immunology specialist, “holding this event was necessary because immunodeficiency diseases. Although not very common, especially primary immunodeficiencies, affect a significant percentage of the population.
HIV is a secondary immunodeficiency, and other types of secondary immunodeficiencies affect many people, including children, adults, and the elderly.”
The specialist continues, “This means that we must be prepared to care for these patients. Also this workshop serves to improve and expand our knowledge on the diagnosis and management of these patients suffering from immunodeficiency, whether primary or secondary.”
Several online presentations were presented during the event’s scientific session. Among the most innovative was one by American pediatric infectious disease specialist Enrique Chacón Cruz, on new vaccine platforms. He explained that among the new goals of vaccinology are improving antigenic affinity. Increasing the number of antigens, greater efficacy and effectiveness, and simpler and faster manufacturing. Which translates into lower costs and an improved safety profile.
In this regard, the immunologist with extensive experience at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin General University Hospital explained that these events are published through the Cuban Society of Immunology. Moreover which is also part of the Latin American Society of Immunology. These events allow specialists from the US, Mexico, and Ecuador to present virtually alongside Holguin professors to share their knowledge.
This workshop served to share the results of science, technology, and innovation in the field of primary and secondary immunodeficiencies. Promoted collaboration between academic and scientific research institutions at local, national, and international levels.
Dr. Hernández also stated that holding a meeting of this type. Sponsored by the provincial chapters of Immunology and Internal Medicine, was very beneficial because, in addition to updating knowledge, it allowed for agreements on strategies related to the management, diagnosis, and treatment of these cases. Especially on how to better guide their profession.
This event marks the beginning of a series of development and training initiatives for immunology personnel. The most immediate actions planned include a scientific event in April 2026, in honor of International Immunology Day. Another event at the end of the same year focusing on autoimmune diseases, which are very common in the population.
