Cubs enter Vegueros’ headquarters through the narrow door

The Holguin Cubs fell 7-3 to the Pinar del Rio Vegueros at Captain San Luis Stadium in one of their most modest performances in the 64th National Baseball Series. Which began the fifth round of home games.

The Vegueros decided the game in the first inning by scoring four runs off Orleydis Cuba (0-1). In his first start of the season, he was completely inefficient. Recording only two outs, allowing two hits, issuing four walks, and being hit by a pitch, although he did strike out one.

Left-hander Andriw Valido came to the rescue, managing to hit two bases and retire seven batters in his consecutive at-bat. However, in the fourth inning, with one out, he was hit by three singles with a sacrifice bunt in between. Allowing two, and in the fifth, William Saavedra homered off him to center field.

In a losing effort, with the game tied 7-1, left-hander Dayrián Batista entered the pitching line. Completing the game without a run, with two singles, one strikeout, and three walks.

This was a bittersweet day for Yasiel González, as he blasted a single off the winning left-hander Gabriel Cantero (2-1) in the first inning. Leading off the fourth, he hit a long home run to left field, his fifth of the championship.

However, he couldn’t decode the pitches of right-hander Yosvani Martínez, who struck him out twice, in the seventh and ninth innings. With the bases loaded, when the possibility of a tie hung in his lap.

In short, the Pinar del Rio team hit nine hits, one more than the Holguin team, and committed the only blunder of the game.

For the Cubs, rookie Jorlis Bravo continued his hot streak with the bat, going 3-for-4 and now leading the series with a 9-for-18 double and a triple. Fellow Sagua player Luis Raúl Domínguez went 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs.

The Holguin team now sits in sixth place with a 13-8 record. Three and a half games behind Santiago de Cuba (15-3) and Matanzas (16-4).
