National project benefits patients with albinism in Holguin

A national project based in the province of Holguin benefits patients with albinism throughout Cuba. Through comprehensive consultations at the Lucía Íñiguez Landín Clinical and Surgical Hospital. A series of actions to improve their quality of life.

The program, called Piel de Coral, includes specialty care such as dermatology, social work, and psychological assistance. For diagnosed patients and their families. Iliana Pupo Herrera, creator of this initiative and national coordinator of the Network of People with Albinism in Cuba, told CNA.

She noted that inclusion is promoted through recreational activities. A fundamental aspect for the well-being of these individuals. Who are often shy and unsociable.

The expert highlighted that Villa Clara, Ciego de Avila, Camagüey, and Las Tunas. There are among the provinces with the highest number of patients. Also where new communication technologies are used to disseminate activities. And several of them have multidisciplinary consultation branches.

Albinism is a heterogeneous genetic disorder caused by mutations in different genes. Which results in a reduction or total absence of melanin pigment in the eyes, skin, and hair.

Holguin is one of the provinces with the highest number of diagnosed cases. Also the Piel de Coral project, based in the eastern province, is comprised of more than 700 people from the Caribbean island.
