With one gold and two bronze medals, the Cuban team finished 16th at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, where they also set two national records and set two personal bests.
The most significant result was triple jumper Leyanis Pérez’s title, with her season-best time of 14.94 meters (m). Her teammate Liadagmis Povea also reached the final and finished fourth (14.72 m).
Roxana Gómez (49.48 seconds) finished sixth in the 400-meter final, while Anisleidis García (5,000 meters) finished in 15:31:35 minutes, although far from the lead. With a career-best throw of 67.25 m, Silinda Morales placed third in the discus, and Daily Cooper, with a personal best of 1:58:16, achieved the second-best time in all the 800-meter heats, although he later finished a distant 25th in the semifinals.
Other notable performances saw Lázaro Martínez secure bronze with his triple jump of 17.49 m, his best of the year. Mario Díaz achieved a significant classification in the discus, finishing fifth in the final with 64.61 m.
In the sprint, Greisy Roble, with a time of 12:83 seconds, made it to the semifinals of the 110m hurdles, and the only Holguín native competing, Andy Hechavarría, finished 22nd in the triple jump with 16.48 m.
The World Athletics Championships, held outdoors in Tokyo, Japan, were won by the United States, with a tally of 16 gold medals, five silver, and the same number of bronze.
