Third Papermakers’ Gathering in Holguin to Promote Artisanal Creation

The Third Gathering of Papermakers, organized by the Cuadernos Papiro Publishing House, will take place from October 24th to 30th in Holguin. With the goal of promoting the creation of paper as a work of art in itself.

This event celebrates Papiro’s proposal in response to the need of Cuban artists and designers to access a medium for their Works. Guaranteeing not only a sustainable medium, with the production of parchments from recycled materials and natural fibers. But also the immersion of creators in the production processes.

Moreover the event was launched more than three years ago at the initiative of Fernando Bacallao. Who also served as the founder of the workshop and as a producer of the movement that emerged later. Manuel Arias, director and editor of Papiro, explained to CNA.

He also commented that each event seeks to promote the method of making manufactured paper and introduce new generations to this concept. In adittion highlighting plant fiber from the initial stage of production and, in the second stage, the volume of the pieces.

An important part of each year is the participation of young students from the El Alba Regional School of Fine Arts. Also who attend conferences and workshops and serve as a venue. As we bring the creators to the Academy, Manuel noted.

Futhermore this edition’s main objective will be to develop the pulp of manufactured paper into volumetric pieces. Continuing the thematic line of previous events and culminating, as on the previous occasion, with the presentation of an art book project.

On the other hand they seek to bring together artists, students, and amateurs. Because the Workshop has always been a space for collaboration. They recognize that the manufacturing technique is captivating, has its charm, and ensures that those who delve into its production always come back to try again, the director emphasized.

Likewise, the event will be dedicated to honoring the Mexican muralist, painter, and sculptor Electa Arenal (May 16th, 1935 – June 12th, 1969) on the 90th anniversary of her birth. The event is being held at the Provincial Center for Visual Arts. Celebrating the artist’s muralist achievements in the city of Holguin.

The Paper Artists’ Gathering, sponsored by the Cuban Fund for Cultural Assets. The Provincial Center for Visual Arts of Holguin, and Cuadernos Papiro, are part of the Ibero-American Culture Festival. Which will arrive in the city of parks in the last week of October.
