One after another, the songs of renowned Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez rained down. Performing his magic for two hours, bringing joy and hope to thousands of people who filled the steps of the University of Havana.
“Ala de colibrí” (Hummingbird’s Wing) was the first song, and Silvio interrupted the opening chords to recall a fragment of José Martí’s article “Maestros Ambulantes” (Wandering Teachers).
The recital included around twenty pieces, some in frank dialogue with the absent-present. Those who were gone because life wasn’t long enough for them to experience this September evening. Along with classic songs and songs from his most recent album, “Quería Saber” (I Wanted to Know), recorded at Ojalá Studios and released on digital platforms in June 2024.
Silvio was accompanied by musicians who have repeated their experience in front of crowds and engagements: Jorge Aragón on piano; Oliver Valdés on drums, congas, and percussion. Emilio Vega on keyboards; Jorge Reyes on double bass; Maykel Elizarde on tres (guitar). Rachid López on backing guitar; and Niurka González on flute, clarinet, and backing vocals.
The “Silvio Rodríguez Tour 2025 ¡Sudamérica en Vivo!” (South America on live!) tour marks the troubadour’s return to Latin American stages after a three-year absence. Also will be an opportunity to hear melodies rooted in the popular imagination. One of the most lucid voices of singer-songwriter music of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The mostly young audience sang along with the 78-year-old troubadour. Who is celebrating 55 years of artistic career with his upcoming tour of several Latin American countries.
This recital marked the start of a tour that will take him and his musicians to Chile (September 29th, October 1st, 5th, and 6th), Argentina (October 11th, 12th, and 21st), Uruguay (October 17th and 18th), Peru (October 25th), and Colombia (October 31st and November 2nd).
