The Copextel subsidiary in Holguin is working on creating solar-powered backup electricity to ensure the continuity of essential services. Such as medical care and banking, contributing to a shift in the energy mix.
George Aguilera Proenza, head of the entity’s Project group, explained to the Cuban News Agency that they design photovoltaic systems for manufacturing and service institutions. Ensuring they maintain service and supply to the population amid the country’s complex electricity situation.
Among the entities for which they are developing these projects are the Frank PaĆs International Airport. The fishing sector, and Popular Savings Bank, with which they plan to install panels in several branches.
The goal is to prioritize power to outdoor ATMs and at least one cash register to avoid interruptions due to power outages and ensure check payments for retirees and social workers.
As part of the programs in which they participate that promote social welfare, including the Strengthening Women’s Leadership and Participation in the Renewable Energy Sector in Cuba (FORMER) project, they are collaborating in the installation of off-grid systems in hard-to-reach locations in several municipalities.
Aguilera added that they are also installing grid injection and lightning protection systems. Including grounding systems, essential for the safety of power plants in open areas.
Futhermore Copextel’s subsidiary in Holguin contributed in 2025 to the construction of the Corua 5 photovoltaic parks in Mayari; Providencia, in the main municipality. And La Caridad-Potrerillo, in Rafael Freyre, with a capacity of 21.8 megawatts each. Moreover in which help reduce dependence on fossil fuels and strengthen national generation.
