Holguin, a prominent host city for the 61st National School Games

The 61st edition of the National School Games was successfully held in various regions of our country, once again with Havana winning in both categories and Holguin as one of the most notable provinces as a host city.

For this version of the main event for Cuba’s sports youth, INDER authorities devised a strategy to ensure that the youth category, which had been affected in previous years, could compete.

According to information from Ramón Ají Fariñas, head of the National School Sports Department, the School Sports Initiation Schools (EIDE) were once again the main villages that hosted the 8,856 participants, including 6,236 athletes.

“58 events were planned, and the provinces of Havana, Sancti Spiritus, Santiago de Cuba, and Holguin stood out for their execution as venues,” stated Ají Fariñas.

“We must highlight the performance of the recreation and mass events departments, as well as the sports medicine centers, and especially the colleagues who guaranteed transportation for the high-quality development of the event,” he added.

The athletes from the capital triumphed among the cadets with 587 points, a total of 235 medals, 89 of them gold. Behind them were Santiago de Cuba (497) and Cienfuegos (469), with Holguin finishing in eleventh place.

Among the juniors, the Havana team dominated with 559 points, followed on the podium by Santiago de Cuba (479) and Villa Clara (403), in second and third in that order. The Holguin team was ninth with 285 points.

The National School Games are the premier sporting event in Cuban sports and are held annually between July and August.
