Visit to Laos Reaffirms Bilateral Ties, Says Díaz-Canel

The First Secretary of the Communist Party (CPC) Central Committee and President Miguel Díaz-Canel emphasized this Sunday in Vientiane that his visit here reaffirms the high importance placed on developing bilateral ties and political dialogue with Laos.

Díaz-Canel made this statement when he was received at the Presidential Palace by the Secretary General of the People’s Revolutionary Party (PPRL) and Laotian President, Thongloun Sisoulith. Whom he thanked for all the displays of affection and hospitality received by the high-level delegation he has led since arriving in Vientiane the day before.

The Cuban head of state emphasized that Laos “is united by a close, historic, and indestructible bond of friendship and collaboration,” and said he cherishes fond memories of his previous visit in 2018. As well as recent meetings with Sisoulith in Beijing, Moscow, and Hanoi, where they met at various commemorations.

In all cases, he stated, we have confirmed the existence of a sincere, honest, and very strong relationship of friendship, as are the ties between our nations and peoples.

Sisoulith, for his part, agreed with Díaz-Canel in highlighting the fact that they have met on several occasions recently and noted that this visit will be another milestone in the traditional relations of friendship between the two countries and will serve to deepen them and achieve greater results.

Later, the CCP Secretary General and Cuban President held a meeting with Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone. During which he noted that the deep ties between Cuba and Laos, founded by their historic leaders, Fidel Castro and Kaysone Phomvihane, continue to this day.

“We grew up observing how those relations developed, of which we are heirs and committed followers,” he emphasized.

In his first official activity here today, Diaz-Canel paid tribute to the heroes and martyrs at the central monument to the Unknown Soldier, where he laid a wreath in a solemn ceremony.

The visit of the CCP General Secretary and Cuban President to Laos concludes a tour that began in Vietnam and then continued in China, from where he traveled here.

In announcing the trip, the Cuban Foreign Ministry stated that “the visits to Vietnam and China have special significance. As they are framed within the context of the 65th anniversary of the historic relations of brotherhood, solidarity, and cooperation between our countries.”

Meanwhile, in the case of Laos, the priority that Cuba places on fraternal and friendly relations with that sisterly, socialist country is reaffirmed.

The historic and fraternal ties between Cuba and Laos, which established diplomatic relations in November 1974, date back to the late 1960s and early 1970s. When the first Cuban medical brigade arrived at the Viengsay caves in Houapanh province to provide services to the population.
