The United States Punishes Cuban Baseball Again, Denounces Díaz-Canel

Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, considered unacceptable this Saturday the discriminatory treatment by the United States against our country’s team ahead of the VI World Baseball Classic.

The United States is punishing baseball again, Díaz-Canel stated on the social media platform X, and denounced that they have not approved Cuba’s participation in the event, scheduled for March 2026, while the other qualified teams have already submitted rosters.

The Cuban head of state stated that it is a political exclusion that violates the spirit of sport. We deserve equal conditions.

This Friday, the Cuban Baseball and Softball Federation (FCBS) issued a protest against the application of what it considered a discriminatory policy against Cuban baseball players. Who have not been officially called up by the MLB.

The teams qualified for the VI World Baseball Classic were required to submit their preliminary 50-player rosters by September 1st, but the Cuban team was unable to comply.

According to a statement from the FCBS, the event organizers have stated that, despite requesting it with sufficient advance notice. They still do not have US government approval for Cubans to participate.

Hosted in the United States, Japan, and Puerto Rico, the sixth edition of the World Baseball Classic will take place from March 5th to 17th, 2026. The tournament will feature 20 teams divided into four groups of five.

According to the schedule, the group rounds will be played in Miami, Florida; Houston, Texas; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Tokyo, Japan. The quarterfinals will be split between Miami and Houston, and the final round will be played in Miami.
