The relocation of the floating pond located at the Gibara Dam, which supplies the eastern water system of the city of Holguin, is part of the hydraulic investments to mitigate the impact of the intense drought affecting the country.
Daniel Báster Ventura, deputy deputy delegate of Hydraulic Resources, told CNA that this project involves moving the station approximately seven meters into the reservoir, allowing for greater utilization of the flow.
He explained that this system is composed of two 300-liter-per-second turbines that transport water to the Holguin 2 water treatment plant in the east of the city.
The project is 65 percent complete and includes the rehabilitation and construction of two discharge and suction collectors. Equipment that optimizes the supply process at this station.
He emphasized that the actions, with an investment of more than 60 million pesos, increase the reservoir’s coverage to more than 150 days. Improving the stability of access to vital water to the main city, one of the Cuban municipalities most affected by the drought.
In addition, a new pipeline is being installed at the Cacoyugüín Dam pumping station. With the goal of utilizing the dam’s dead volume by building a platform to place a pump at a lower elevation than the current one.
As a result of the impact of the drought, the province of Holguin is promoting the comprehensive rehabilitation of the three main supply systems of the Güirabo, Cacoyugüín, and Gibara reservoirs. Which includes correcting leaks, repairing equipment, and other alternatives to improve supply.
