With the strengthening of the Holguin-Las Tunas route, through the addition of locomotive 312014 and railcar 2228. The northeastern region has daily trips to the neighboring province, improving connections with the eastern part of the country.
To meet the population’s demands, the Holguin Railways Base Business Unit reinforced the service with the only available train, dedicated to operations in the shunting yard. This involved reorganizing work schedules and creating two crews, Lázaro Llanes Lemes, deputy director of the Cuban Railways Union, explained to CNA.
The train operates three times a week—Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays—departing at 8:20 a.m. from the Holguin city terminal. At a cost of 80 Cuban pesos, benefiting up to 700 passengers depending on the size of the train cars.
Additionally, to protect the route, the route of the railcar known as El Pocholito has been modified for Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, carrying approximately 94 passengers.
The route, with stops in Cacocum, Maceo, Mir, Sabanazo, Omaha, Calixto Garcia, and Las Tunas. Benefits remote communities such as Güirabo, Providencia, Cristino Naranjo, Sao Piedra, Cupey, Rioja, Gaston, and Fleitas. Where optional stops are possible, said Llanes Lemes.
The five cars used, with a capacity of between 50 and 70 passengers, are also used on the Holguin-Antilla train. Which operates with the same frequency and arrives from that coastal municipality at 7:20 a.m. A scheme that allowed for a strategic combination and coverage of a large part of the province by rail.
The executive noted that, despite the difficulties in the sector, including the technical deterioration of the locomotives and fuel shortages. They are promoting the expansion of services through the rescue and restoration of rail cars.
Currently, in conjunction with the 60th Anniversary of the October Revolution Company, they are recovering a vehicle that is undergoing bodywork and paint repairs. This vehicle will be added to trains 2228 and 4148. The latter destined for Alto Cedro, in the municipality of Cueto, facilitating population mobility.
