The Water Resources Department in the province of Holguin is investing to restore the northern water supply system to the main city. Which is facing the most complex situation due to the intense drought affecting the area.
This project focuses on the construction of a structure capable of harnessing the dead volume of the Cacoyugüín Dam, the main source of water for this network, which has a low flow rate due to the lack of rainfall.
Juan Mario Echavarría Hernández, territorial delegate for the sector, told CNA that the project includes moving the pump to a lower area to maximize the reservoir’s capacity. Designed to recover through rainfall runoff.
He emphasized that intensive work is currently underway on locating the equipment, performing welding, and providing service to more than 85,000 residents who receive water through the pumping station located at the dam.
He added that, although the city of Holguin is designed to be drought-resistant. There are technological obsolescence and breakdowns caused by overuse of equipment.
In the case of the northern system, the station’s horizontal deep-well pumps are not working, remaining out of service and allowing operation with reduced volumes of water. Explained Nardo Cornelio Rodríguez García, brigade chief and operator.
This reservoir supplies the Alcides Pino, Santiesteban, and Ramón Quintana districts. With impacts in more than 10 of its 24 distribution areas and cycles exceeding 100 days.
The city also has the East and South systems, where measures are being implemented to optimize existing resources. Seek out its own sources, and maintain the vitality of economic objectives and social institutions.
