The installation of generators and the repair of motors and pumps are among the actions aimed at improving the water supply to the Holguin municipalities of Rafael Freyre, Baguanos, Banes, Frank Pais, and Calixto Garcia, the most affected by the drought.
Juan Mario Echavarría Hernández, territorial delegate of Hydraulic Resources, told CNA that the main impacts are due to the low reservoir volume and the instability of electricity generation. Which requires approximately 36 hours of continuous power supply to ensure system stability.
He emphasized that the Electric Company and other entities have adopted measures aimed at supplying generators and protecting substations and main pumping stations.
He also noted that the resolution of pump failures caused by technological obsolescence is being accelerated. That components have been recovered through the application of science and innovation by adapting designs to local resources and conditions.
The executive added that the import of equipment to improve the efficiency of transfers and the operating conditions of the reservoir water during the dry season is planned for the last quarter of the year.
He commented that the strategy includes a pipeline supply system, promoted by municipal governments, which aims to improve the situation during cycles exceeding 100 days and includes the city of Holguin.
He reported that the province’s dams are at 65 percent of their capacity and that the territory is facing one of the driest periods in the last decade. With the most critical situation in Cacoyugüin, Gibara, and Güirabo, on which service to the city of Holguin depends.
Currently, more than 60 communities are suffering from the intense drought, affecting more than 400,000 residents. This situation is worsened by the lack of electricity and illegal connections for agricultural operations.
