Mayari aims to increase rice production and quality in the harvest

Mayari is currently the largest rice producer among the municipalities of Holguin province. To date, 420 of the 526 hectares committed to the current season have been planted.

The territory is now experiencing the peak of the spring harvest. Where production has almost doubled from the previous period, amid a shortage of inputs, spare parts, and fuel.

Despite the efforts and sacrifices of Mayari farmers, the harvest is insufficient to meet the demand for the grain in the área. As the municipality consumes approximately 370 tons per month.

Achieving yields of between three and four tons per hectare is among the current goals of rice producers in Mayari. According to information provided by Enrique Roché Fernández, director of the Agroindustrial Base Grain Business Unit of the Municipal Agroindustrial Company.

In 2024, rice production in Cuba, according to a Granma publication, only reached about 30% of what was achieved in 2018. Rice production suffered a considerable decline. Planting and production levels were very low.

For this year, the plan is to reach 100,000 hectares and obtain about 100,000 tons of the grain. Which, if achieved, will represent a 20% increase compared to the previous calendar year.

However, yields will continue to be extremely modest. As 1.7 tons per hectare were obtained in 2024, and 2.2 tons are planned for this year.
