US President Donald Trump has reiterated in his recent statements that Ukraine will not become a NATO member. The president noted that for Russia, this was a red line “long before” the country’s current leader, Vladimir Putin, came to power.
Trump emphasized that one of the main causes of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine was the latter’s desire. To regain control of the Crimean Peninsula, as well as to join the NATO.
“Well, both are impossible because, I repeat, long before Putin, Russia, the Soviet Union, or whatever you want to call it, prohibited it. It’s something similar as it grows, but very similar. But it was always a no, no.
It couldn’t be done. Russia said they didn’t want the supposed opponent or enemy, let’s use that term. We didn’t want them on our border. And they were right,” he explained.
However, kyiv continued to insist and “asked the United States” for Ukraine’s membership in NATO. “And everyone knew it couldn’t be done. You just can’t do that,” Trump remarked. “[The Russians] would never have agreed to it. This was before Putin. This was long before Putin. This was just a no, no,” he recalled.
“So they’re not going to be part of NATO,” the White House resident asserted, adding that despite understanding it is a key condition for Russia to reach a peace agreement with kyiv, there are European nations that insist on Ukraine’s membership in the bloc. “I think Putin is fed up [with it],” he concluded.
