Italian Agency Contributes to Social Development in Cuba

The Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) consolidated its work in Cuba in 2024 with a total of 18 initiatives in strategic sectors. Including culture, sustainable agriculture, and territorial development.

According to its annual report, investments reached €69 million. Demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainable development and bilateral cooperation.

The program approaches were comprehensive, inclusive, and territorial. Placing special emphasis on strengthening local capacities and promoting innovation, gender equality, and climate resilience.

In the cultural sphere, the “Santa Clara” project stands out, revitalizing the convent of the same name. Transforming it into an international center for training in heritage restoration.

Similarly, the “Creative Zones” program promoted cultural spaces in Havana and Matanzas and primarily involved young people and women in sustainable fashion, comics, and visual arts initiatives, according to the document.

Regarding agriculture, the “Hab.Ama” initiative strengthened more than 370 local productive entities, reinforcing food security in the capital.

Projects such as “PiùCafé” to modernize the coffee production chain and new programs such as “Agrobúfalo” and “Línea Verde” that integrate livestock and food production with the use of renewable energy also continued.

Finally, in territorial development, the “Havana Est” project promoted participatory governance and formulated municipal strategies for sustainable development. These strategies have yielded results thanks to collaboration with the European Union and the United Nations. Which enabled the AICS to launch the “Sustainable Municipalities” program to promote the ecological transition in eight Cuban municipalities.

AICS carries out actions that reflect Italian cooperation’s commitment to the sustainable development goals. Placing Cuba as a priority country for its cooperation agenda in the region.

This has yielded concrete results in promoting social, economic, and environmental well-being. Thus reaffirming the strategic alliance between Italy and Cuba for inclusive and sustainable development in the near future.
