Health Authorities in Holguin Insist on Dengue Prevention

Given the increase in dengue cases in the province of Holguin. Which is common during the summer months. Health authorities are urging prevention of this disease caused by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Geanela Cruz, director of the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Microbiology, informed CNA that during the holiday season, an increase in cases among pediatric patients is common. Making it necessary to strengthen safety measures.

She emphasized that health departments are screening vulnerable groups and that specialized multidisciplinary teams are working to care for each patient.

Also she indicated that in Holguin, the predominant breeding grounds for the transmitting mosquito are concentrated in water tanks inside homes, making self-monitoring essential.

She added that epidemiological surveillance is maintained in the family doctor’s and nurse’s offices. With emphasis on the main municipality, one of the highest risk areas.

He also referred to the use of face masks as a protective measure in crowded places, a prevention strategy.

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted to people by mosquitoes, most common in tropical and subtropical climates.

In conclusion most patients experience high fever, headache, nausea, and a skin rash. The disease can be cured in about two weeks. Although in some cases it worsens and requires hospitalization.
