The Cuban women’s team achieved its third consecutive victory in Group B of the U-23 Volleyball Cup. Defeating host Mexico 3-1 at the Domo Feria in Guanajuato, León, where they will compete in the semifinals today.
As expected, the match was close, with the Cubans winning the first set 31-29 and losing the second 21-25. But rallying in the third and fourth, 25-20 and 27-25, a performance that saw them finish undefeated as the top team.
The home team was stronger on attack, scoring 62 points to 57, outblocked 15-8, and tied on serve (3-3).
Previously, Cuba defeated Canada 3-2 (18-25, 23-25, 26-24, 25-18, and 17-15) and Nicaragua 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, and 25-16).
Cuba is the defending champion, having dominated the last edition in 2023, and several of its players are now returning to the Guanajuato tournament.
The roster includes opposite hitters Lisania Grafort and Martha García; middle hitters Yensy Kindelán and Yalain Regla De La Peña. Outside hitters Whitney James, Lianet García, and Claudia Tarín. Setters Brenda Mia Nold and Lisbeisys Hernández; and libero Yamilena Ruiz.
As established by the organizers, the leading teams in each group will advance directly to the semifinals. While the second- and third-place teams will advance to the quarterfinals to determine the four teams that will compete for medals.
Section A lists the teams from the Dominican Republic, the United States, Costa Rica, and Suriname.
