Oropesa Wins at International Badminton Tournament in Bolivia

Holguin native Taymara Oropesa contributed a gold and a bronze medal to Cuba’s (1-2-2) haul at the First International Badminton Tournament of Sucre 2025 in Bolivia.

Taymara’s title came in the women’s doubles, where she teamed up with Leyanis Contreras to defeat Brazilians Luisa Bueno and María Julia Nascimento in straight sets (21-18, 21-17).

Oropesa earned a bronze medal in the singles, matching the result achieved by Roberto Carlos Herrera and Juan Carlos Bencomo in the men’s doubles.

Herrera took silver in the singles, after being defeated by the favorite, five-time Olympian Kevin Cordon of Guatemala, who won 21-11 and 21-15.

Bencomo and Leyanis also won a silver medal in the mixed doubles competition, losing to Peruvians Sharum Durand and Namie Miyahira in a duel that ended 21-14 and 21-18.

Earning six thousand points toward qualification for the Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games was part of the Cubans’ achievement in that Bolivian city.
