Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced today that deportation flights from the United States have begun departing from the Alligator Alcatraz immigration detention center.
The controversial facility, located in the Florida Everglades, saw three flights operated by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) depart, DeSantis said.
The first of those flights had 100 detainees on board, although the destination is unknown. “I think the frequency of flights will increase, and I think we’ll see a dramatic increase in the numbers,” the governor said at a press conference, where he anticipated that Florida will be a “force multiplier for deportations.”
“Alligator Alcatraz,” surrounded by dangerous wildlife, was inaugurated by President Donald Trump on July 1st and now houses up to 2,000 undocumented immigrants.
Democrats have called for the facility’s closure, citing “cruel and inhumane acts.” Other reports indicate that some cells contain up to 30 people crammed together, and there is speculation that undocumented immigrants are not receiving due process before being deported.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem defended Alligator Alcatraz on July 13th: “Our federal detention centers are held to higher standards than most local or state facilities, and even federal prisons. The standards are extremely high.”
Florida has implemented aggressive tactics to comply with the president’s immigration agenda and is seeking to become even more involved.
The governor promoted the idea that “Alligator Alcatraz” could house up to 3,000 undocumented immigrants and expressed interest in opening the Camp Blanding Joint Training Center to detain even more undocumented immigrants.
The federal government is expected to create similar detention centers in other states, such as Texas (where what could be the largest of its kind in the United States is being built), Mississippi, and South Carolina.
Last week, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that Camp Atterbury, Indiana, and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, will become temporary migrant detention centers.
