Reactivation of Rail Service Announced in Eastern Cuba

Cuban Minister of Transportation Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila announced today on his Facebook profile the reactivation of the rail service. Connecting the eastern provinces of Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, and Holguin.

The minister explained that the return of this route comes after a prolonged period of inactivity caused by technical problems that affected the train’s operation.

He explained that the service interruption was primarily due to failures in the Madrina car. An essential component for the convoy’s operation, responsible for pulling the other cars.

Thanks to structural repair work carried out by workers at the Taller Vanguardia Proletaria in Guantanamo. The train resumed operations with a new schedule: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, carrying between 600 and 700 passengers per trip, Rodríguez Dávila wrote.

He specified that the service has five cars—four for passengers and one for express service—and offers fares ranging between 135 and 150 Cuban pesos, depending on the distance traveled.

Rodríguez Dávila clarified that this reactivation is not a temporary measure associated with the summer season. But rather is intended as a permanent transportation solution. Provided the technical condition of the equipment allows it and there are no impacts due to fuel or lubricant shortages.

The objective and commitment is to maintain this service on a stable basis. For the benefit of the population and regional connectivity, he stated.
