Holguin for Better Control of High Blood Pressure

Through a comprehensive approach to primary and secondary health care, the province of Holguin is promoting the control of high blood pressure. One of the most prevalent chronic non-communicable diseases in the province.

Reyber Jesús Domínguez Pérez, a primary care specialist in Cardiology, told CNA that the incidence of these conditions has increased in recent years and is one of the leading causes of strokes.

He indicated that family doctor and nurse practitioner offices promote prevention, aimed at monitoring the main risk factors, such as obesity and premature aging.

Dominguez Pérez, also president of the Holguin Chapter of this specialty, pointed out that, for older adults, a group of professionals offers educational talks aimed at promoting healthy lifestyle habits, including physical exercise.

The expert noted that surveillance is prioritized for vulnerable pediatric age groups, who have also seen an increase in the occurrence of this condition in the last five years.

High blood pressure occurs when the blood pressure in the blood vessels is too high and can become serious if not treated promptly. Key risk factors include advanced age, genetic causes, overweight, lack of physical activity, and excessive consumption of salt and alcohol.

In Holguin, this condition affects approximately 40 percent of the population, and multidisciplinary medical care is provided to improve survival and prevent associated cardiac disorders, such as myocardial infarction.
