Measures implemented in Holguin to protect beaches

The Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment (Citma) in the province of Holguin is promoting a series of measures aimed at protecting beaches. One of the most vulnerable ecosystems due to the increase in visitors during the summer.

Ridel Rodríguez Paneque, head of the coastal management department, told CNA that, with the increase in bathers, throwing fruit peels and food scraps. Cutting tree branches, lighting fires, and washing kitchen utensils are common.

He noted that such social indiscipline is detrimental to these spaces. Therefore, it is essential to strengthen environmental education. Particularly among adolescents and young people.

The specialist noted that, during this period, compliance with current regulations aimed at protecting the coastal zone is being monitored. Although the work of the inspection teams must continue to improve.

Regulations are also being implemented, such as prohibiting parking on the sand. Limiting games and other activities near endangered communities. Also conducting talks with violators to raise awareness about the importance of these ecosystems in the environmental balance.

In turn, the Center for Environmental Research and Services, affiliated with Citma, continues to promote studies and beach management programs aimed at supporting economic validation. Promoting sustainable use, and contributing to decision-making on these issues.

Holguin has more than 200 kilometers of coastline, and based on scientific developments, actions are being carried out. Such as the removal of construction on the dunes, sand dumping, reforestation. Control of invasive exotic species, and solid waste collection, among other conservation activities.

During July and August, beach resorts such as Playa Blanca and Guardalavaca, which receive the largest number of vacationers in the área. Reinforce their conservation measures, taking into account land use plans.
