Nine athletes from the province of Holguin, in five sports, all debuting at this level. Make up the Cuban delegation that will participate in the II Junior Pan American Games, held in Asunción, Paraguay, from August 9th to 23rd.
The list is led by rower Ana Laura Jiménez Bueno, winner of a gold medal (four pair, open lightweight) and two silver medals (single scull, lightweight, and double sculls, lightweight) at the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games (CGA) in San Salvador. As well as a bronze medal in the mixed coxed eight-scull at the Pan American Games (PAG) in Santiago, Chile, that same year.
Also standing out in the over-67 kilogram division is taekwondo athlete Elianet Crespo Hernández, who won bronze in the TK3 (team) event at the 2023 JCC and won the Pan American Under-22 Series II and the First Kukkiwon Pan American Cup in Lima, Peru, both in 2024.
Volleyball player Yamilena Ruiz Pis, signed to the Romanian league by Arges Pitesti, and javelin thrower Javier Noris Arias, who placed 24th at the World Athletics Championships for those under 20, held in the Peruvian capital last year, will be in Asunción.
Completing the northeastern roster for the major multidisciplinary event in the Guaraní capital are divers Anais Negret Terrero and Melany Zaldívar Sánchez, rower Félix Puentes Batista, pole vaulter Calet Durán Tomacen, and long-distance runner Elier Martínez Fonseca.
Salvador Hidalgo González, head of High Performance in the province of Holguin, confirmed to the Cuban News Agency that the Caribbean team also includes fencing coaches Osmani Machado Fiffe and tennis coach Orleydis Revé Matos.
The Holguin province will also be represented by Pablo Arturo Camping García and Camilo Reynaldo Ramírez, national commissioners for cycling and weightlifting, respectively.
In the first edition of these competitions, held in Cali Valle, Colombia, in 2021, eight athletes from the province of Holguin participated, and only Andy Hechavarría won a medal, gold in the triple jump, with a mark of 16.77 meters.
Handball players Andro González and Luis Ángel Matos finished fourth; artistic swimmer Lianelis Santos finished sixth in the team event and highlight routine; and pole vaulter Rosaidi Robles took seventh place.
Shooter Eddy Antonio Vázquez finished seventh in the 10-meter mixed air rifle and ninth in the individual event of the same discipline. While cyclists Evelyn Díaz and Daymelín Pérez placed 14th and 32nd, respectively, in the road event and were disqualified in the Madison event.
