Cuba is ready to participate with 230 athletes in 28 disciplines in the second edition of the Asuncion 2025 Junior Pan American Games, from August 9th to 23rd. The delegation is made up of 117 men and 113 women, 82 percent of whom come from high-performance centers.
José Antonio Miranda, Director General of High Performance at the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation (Inder). Informed the press that wrestler Yaynelis Sanz and judoka Zail Ramírez will carry the Cuban flag for the Cuban delegation.
Importantly, the sports delegation will have representation from all 15 provinces. Cuba is attending with 18 more competitors than four years ago, and the group includes 188 from high-performance centers.
Miranda stated that it will be a difficult commitment to fulfill, but not impossible, as there are six sports with good chances of winning gold: athletics, canoeing, weightlifting, wrestling, judo, and rowing, to which another 13 of the qualified athletes could be added.
The Cuban delegation will be distributed among two accommodation venues and will travel in stages. Depending on the competition schedule; Cuba, Mexico, Brazil, and the host nation, Paraguay, will have the largest number of competitors.
In Asuncion, 216 direct spots will be distributed to the champions for the Lima 2027 Pan American Games. So one of the goals is to maximize the number of spots.
Athletes from the largest of the Antilles will compete in only 54.7 percent of the 334 events scheduled by the organizers.
It’s worth remembering that Asuncion is the continent’s premier multi-sport event for athletes between the ages of 12 and 22. The first edition was held in Cali-Valle in 2021. Where Cuba finished fifth in the medal table, with 29 gold, 19 silver, and 22 bronze medals, for a total of 70 medals, behind Brazil, Colombia, the United States, and Mexico.
According to the organizers, this second edition will feature more than 4,200 athletes from 41 countries. Who will compete in 28 sports and 42 disciplines, spread across two venues in Asuncion: the Olympic Park and the National Sports Secretariat, as well as the sub-venues in Encarnación and Ypacaraí.
It is also known that there will be a total of 216 tickets to the Lima Pan American Games, 16 in team sports.
