The Holguin Cachorros continued their dismal run in the final stretch of the VIII U-23 National Baseball Series. On Wednesday suffered their sixth consecutive loss, 6-4 to Granma. Definitively eliminating any chance of qualifying for the semifinals.
The Holguin Cachorros, visiting at Mártires de Barbados Stadium, held a 4-0 lead, which was later reduced to 4-2 in the fourth inning. Until the Alazanes scored four runs in the sixth inning to seal the game.
In that inning, reliever Juan Luis Matos was once again ineffective, not getting any outs. Issuing a walk, and allowing two hits, including the decisive home run by cleanup hitter Ernesto Pérez (3rd).
Ultimately, each team committed an error; the Cachorros hit nine hits and the Alazanes five. Ángel Altunaga won (3-0) and the loss went to young Alaín Torres (0-1).
Alaín, as the leadoff reliever, pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing two hits, an equal number of earned runs, striking out three, but walking five, one intentionally, and being hit by a pitch.
At Nguyen Van Troi Stadium, the Santiago de Cuba Wasps defeated the Guantanamo Indians again, 4-2, with a solo home run by José Miguel González (2-0), a save by Rafael Castillo (2), and a loss by Jhon Nápoles (0-1). Harold Vázquez (5th) homered for the winners.
The Wasps and Alazanes, now with 10 and 7, continue their battle for a spot in Group D for the semifinals. Guantanamo and Holguin share the bottom three with 7 and 10.
This Thursday concludes the official qualifying schedule for U-23 Baseball. But we’ll have to wait for the remaining matches in Group A to begin the semifinals.
