The Lázaro Peña Cigar Factory in the province of Holguin utilizes more than 90 percent of the thousand tons of waste. Generated annually in the production process as part of the implementation of circular economy programs in the eastern province.
Addiel Pérez Suárez, the entity’s general director, noted that the industry reuses components. Including manila bags, sacks, paper, cardboard, and surplus wood from the main production lines, to make ropes, furniture, diaries, and other items.
He emphasized that these resources are sold to workers through men’s care projects. Which generate income and improve families’ quality of life.
He also installed a reconstituted tobacco plant at the company, which allows the strands and dust to be recycled and given new use value with the required quality standards, he explained.
As part of its contribution to environmental protection, ties are strengthened with the community’s primary schools. Where participation contests, educational talks, and audiovisual screenings on environmental care are held.
Since 2009, the Cigar Factory in Holguin has had a certified environmental management system and stands out for its performance in this area. Earning it national and provincial recognition and awards.
Recently at the 20th edition of the Expocaribe International Fair, its Criollo cigarettes won the Quality Award, and in the product and service category, its pneumatic paper compactor was also recognized.
In the region, the Inejiro Asanuma Spinning Mill, the Gran Muthu Almirante Beach Hotel, and the Nickel Business Group are promoting the circular economy as a strategy to reduce solid waste pollution, one of the most common problems in Cuba.
