The World Food Programme (WFP), sponsored by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (Koica), is preparing to begin the second phase of the project ‘Act Differently!‘. Aimed at achieving nutritional security for vulnerable sectors in eastern Cuba.
In an exclusive interview with CNA, Étienne Labande, WFP representative in the country, explained that the first phase, which started in 2020, allowed for the creation of a model that covers aspects of production, reduction of losses, and access. Which involved supporting farmers to improve their work in terms of volume, diversity, and quality, aimed at social safety nets.
Due to the success of the implementation in five municipalities in the eastern provinces, where 52 entities benefited, over 16 supply systems, and thousands of people, a five-year extension was approved, which will maintain the same objectives and benefit other territories.
Among them are the municipalities of Yateras in Guantanamo; Rafael Freyre in Holguin; Rio Cauto in Granma; Songo-La Maya in Santiago de Cuba; and Jesús Menéndez in Las Tunas. Where it will pursue the integration of lessons learned, strengthen the link between science and production, and include a more scientific approach, it was noted.
Hyeon Han Kang, deputy director of the Koica office, pointed out at the final session of the National Workshop on project results that the shared experiences highlight the involvement of authorities at both local and national levels. Also which contributed to the sustainability of the activities and improved food conditions for children, the elderly, pregnant women, and their families.
One of the most significant achievements was the alignment with national policies from an intersectoral approach that contributed to the training of individuals with solid knowledge, skills, and values for their comprehensive development, commented Mary Carmen Rojas Torres, director of Specialized Educational Activities of the Ministry of Education.
Leonel Leyva Sarmiento, mayor of Urbano Noris, a municipality in Holguin linked to Koica, as the program is also known, expressed his gratitude for the impact generated on the stability of local farmers’ work for social institutions, which enabled the government to work on complementing that aid.
Developed also in the territories of Niceto Pérez, Guantanamo; Guama, Santiago de Cuba; Jiguani, Granma, and Manati, Las Tunas, the implementation of ¡Actúa Diferente! had the support of the ministries of Public Health, Domestic Trade, Science, Technology and Environment, among others.
