A new batch of 100 minibuses for public passenger transport will be distributed among the six provinces of the country with the highest urban traffic, reported Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, Minister of Transport of Cuba.
He specified that, responding to concerns and suggestions from the public, the Ministry of Transport (Mitrans) decided to allocate 50 of these vehicles to the provinces of Santiago de Cuba (20), Holguin (10), Camagüey (10), Villa Clara (five), and Ciego de Avila (five), with the remaining 50 going to Havana. Where they were initially intended to be fully allocated.
Rodríguez Dávila explained on his official Facebook page that this distribution is due to the fact that urban traffic in the capital accounts for approximately 50 percent of the country’s traffic.
He clarified that they are not distributed among all provinces because a minimum of five minibuses is required for each route in order to achieve an adequate level of service.
These vehicles are ideal for short trips in sections of up to approximately 10 kilometers, which have a high mobility of people, he said. Likewise, the minister assured that to the extent that it is possible to continue acquiring these means of transport, the service will be advanced in the rest of the provinces.
The minibuses, which will operate on a system similar to that of the well-known Gazelles, are equipped with air conditioning and have a capacity for 14 passengers.
The price will be 20 pesos for any section of the route, said the head of Mitrans, and announced that they will not carry out night service. The buses will remain at the Base, once the service is concluded, he said.
The routes will be different from the current “gazelles”, shorter and cover different areas of the city with high mobility, between hospitals and interchange points. Although the principle of the service is similar, that is, fixed route and stops at the request of passengers.
According to reports, they will be operated by the TaxisCuba Company in Havana at a new agency, and in the rest of the country at the existing agencies. Through a contracting system similar to that of the Gazelles with the drivers.
The project, Rodríguez Dávila assured, is one of the alternatives promoted by Mitrans with the approval of the central government, with which vehicles were obtained using part of the foreign currency generated by the exporting companies of the transport system, in this case, aviation.
