The FIDE Master (MF) from Pinar del Rio, Elizabeth Luis Álvarez, and her Camagüey counterpart, Leduard González Soler, were crowned on Monday in the national youth chess championships. Blitz (rapid games) category, held at the EIDE Pedro Díaz Coello in Holguin.
Luis Álvarez accumulated eight points, resulting from the same number of wins and one solitary defeat, pushing fellow MF Lorena Montejo from Villa Clara to second place and Greter Caballero from Mayabeque to third, as reported to the Cuban News Agency by national referee Roberto Alcántara.
Montejo scored seven points while Caballero finished with six and a half in a tournament where the host Dairenis Guerrero placed eighth with a total of five points.
In the absolute tournament, The fiercest battle was for the title between Leduard González and Havana’s MF Daniel Hidalgo, who both exhibited seven and a half points.
However, when the tiebreaker system was applied, it favored the player from Agramonte, who won undefeated with six victories and three draws.
The third place went to MF Ronniel Ramírez from Camagüey, who finished with seven points, while local player David Calzadilla landed in fifth place with six points.
Alcántara explained that by provinces, Havana took the top position on a podium completed by Camagüey and Holguin.
