They work in Holguin to preserve railways

The Basic Business Unit (UEB) Railways Rafael Freyre in Holguin province preserves more than 50 kilometers of intact railways in order to keep in operation the transportation of passengers to isolated communities.

Five popular councils with complex topographies are covered by the entity’s ferrobus service. Also known as Transferraz, which benefits thousands of residents, including students, pregnant women and the sick, according to José Luis Pérez Rodríguez, director of the UEB, told CNA.

The preservation of all the original lines of the territory, one of the narrowest in the country, with only 30 inches, constitutes the guarantee of access to localities that, due to the deterioration of roads, do not allow the arrival of any alternative means of public transportation, he said.

For the maintenance and prompt repair of breakdowns, the company has a specialized brigade of workers who ensure the continuity of the service in complex economic conditions that affect the availability of resources such as lubricants and sleepers.

Amaro García Montero, head of the brigade, explained that the team works on improving tracks and turnouts. Rectifying potholes and solving obstructions, so that they meet the established safety standards and reduce the possibility of derailment or stranded vehicles.

Among the 20 favored settlements that have established stretches covered with three carahatas are Batey, La Sierra, Peluda and Jobal. Which have frequencies from Monday to Saturday and affordable prices for the population.

Transferraz, which is part of the Eastern Railway Company, has been awarded the status of Outstanding Collective on five occasions and that of National Vanguard by the Workers’ Central Union of Cuba (CTC) for nearly 20 years dedicated to innovation, preservation of local history and social work.
