Damage around the airport

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this devastating event. At this time, our main focus is to support all those affected and their families,” Air India President Natarajan Chandrasekaran said.

The airline said the injured were transported to the nearest hospitals.

“The scene is shocking. Everyone is running right now trying to save as many lives as possible. A rescue operation is underway at the site, very close to the airport,” correspondent Gagdekar said.

He also reported that ambulances were all over the area and roads were blocked.

Emergency crews were trying to extinguish a fire and firefighters were working through smoke in charred streets.

“People said they heard a loud noise and saw black smoke coming out. A lot of people started to congregate here. Volunteers in the area are trying to help as much as possible,” he added.
“Firefighters then started the rescue operation. They are continuing to extract bodies from the area.”

“This Air India crash is the first time a Boeing 787 aircraft has gone down in this way,” said Jonathan Josephs, BBC business reporter.

The model, also known as Dreamliner, was launched 14 years ago and just six weeks ago the aircraft manufacturer praised it for reaching 1 billion passengers carried.

To commemorate that occasion, the company said the worldwide 787 fleet, comprising more than 1,175 aircraft, has made nearly 5 million flights, covering more than 30 million flight hours.
