Several students of the University of Medical Sciences of Holguin (UCMHo), motivated by the high incidence of chronic non-communicable diseases, especially ischemic heart disease. Located among the first causes of mortality in Cuba and globally, carried out a research on how risk factors affect the appearance of these diseases.
Regarding the results obtained, one of the authors of this scientific work, Marlon Fernandez Marrero, a fifth-year medical student, explains. “In our work we studied how risk factors can influence the appearance of major cardiac events. Together with other colleagues, we carried out a study on a group of affected patients, where we obtained results showing that if we identify risk factors such as arterial hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus, sedentary lifestyle and a history of first-degree heart disease early on. We can have a positive impact by reducing the rate of these non-communicable diseases”.
Every year, Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) are classified as nine of the 10 leading causes of death in the world. A health reality that evidences the need to transform it with actions aimed at timely diagnosis. Adequate medical care and improving the quality of life of those who suffer from them.
In this sense, the also member of the Student Scientific Group of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Holguin (FCMHo) refers to the importance of socializing such research results in events such as the recently concluded edition of Expo-Science 2025. “This type of events is of great importance because they allow making public the results of research that we carry out day by day with our patients. In this way we respond to problems of daily medical practice. Such as non-communicable diseases and the risk of cardiovascular diseases in a population like Cuba, which is very old”.
Precisely, population aging is one of the fundamental risk factors in these diseases, “therefore we are very grateful for a space where we can do science and reach the population. So that they know that sometimes by modifying small lifestyles, eating healthy, exercising daily, avoiding obesity. It is possible to have a positive influence and prevent death from non-communicable diseases. As is the case of ischemic heart disease”, he concluded.
The health system in Holguin outlines its work aimed at putting into practice concrete actions for the implementation of the National Strategy of Attention to Non-Communicable Diseases and their risk factors.
