Cuba and the European Union discuss a cooperation progress

The European Union (EU) and Cuba will install today in Brussels their IV Joint Committee. A space in which they will address the progress of the Political Agreement on Dialogue and Cooperation signed in 2016.

The meeting will give continuity to the rapprochement between the bloc of 27 member states and the Antillean nation, from a mechanism that held in December 2022 its previous Joint Committee. In which the parties discussed the progress in the implementation of the agreement signed almost nine years ago.

It is expected that the exchange of criteria will make it possible to analyze cooperation opportunities within the EU Global Gateway initiative. Moreover in sectors ranging from agriculture and the fight against climate change to renewable energies and culture.

The EU represents for Cuba an important commercial partner and the main foreign investor, with prominence in areas such as tourism, construction and industry.

In an advance to Prensa Latina, diplomats from the island pointed out the interest in continuing to strengthen relations on both sides of the Atlantic on the basis of the strengthening of the Political Agreement on Dialogue and Cooperation signed and the principles of reciprocity, respect and mutual benefit.

They also stated that Cuba will reiterate its denunciation of the effects of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the U.S. for more than six decades and its intensification. A siege that with its extraterritorial component impacts and pressures EU citizens, companies and banks.

Last month, European Commission Vice-President Kaja Kallas, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, defended the EU-Cuba Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement as a tool to boost ties in areas including ecological transition and economic modernization and to address differences.

Sectors of the extreme right and the European right seek to derail the agreement with accusations regarding human rights. A stance rejected in the old continent by defenders of multilateralism. The right to self-determination and collaboration in the face of the current challenges facing humanity.
