Cuban Telecommunications Company S.A. (Etecsa) will apply measures to facilitate Internet access for university students. According to a public appearance on Monday by the company’s president, Tania Velázquez.
During the television program Mesa Redonda, Velázquez assured that the company is committed to improving the relationship between students of higher education institutions and infocommunications. Both in and out of the academic environment.
She also stated that the measures planned to fulfill this purpose have a solid foundation in the study of the behavior of 60,000 students at that level. By virtue of which they can “validate which ones we should strengthen”.
“We are going to implement the possibility that they can buy a second data plan of six gigabytes. And, therefore, they could have 12 in a month for a cost of 720 CUP (national currency)”, she explained, without specifying the date of implementation.
She also stated that “free access will be enabled to a group of sites that are still being charged”.
There are already more than 40 sites free of charge, but we want to continue increasing that option and we are identifying with the agencies which ones we are going to add, she commented.
Also, she added, we will continue working with the objective of increasing the use of national platforms. The use of existing applications and we must adapt them, customize them according to the needs of each organization.
Among other actions, we are allocating space in Etecsa’s data centers to house scientific journals. We are already making the necessary inventory to be able to take them to our data centers, she said.
“We also want to strengthen the free educational environments of universities, locating the physical servers in our company’s centers to provide energy assurance,” she said, adding that the purpose is ‘to provide much more security and strength to our nodes’.
Another important step is to strengthen the Wifi zones, because many educational centers do not have this mobility, she said.
According to the businesswoman, other measures are being prepared to enable greater access to the Internet for high school students, teachers of all levels, academics and specialists from different sectors.
At the Round Table, it was also reported that an extra data plan of less than 3,360 pesos will be applied and the validity of the plans was extended to 35 days, which can be accumulated.
Etecsa, its services and the modification of offers for prepaid services, was the subject of the program. In which also appeared the interim Minister of Communications, Ernesto Rodríguez. The commercial vice-president of the company. Lidia Esther Hidalgo, and the president of the University Student Federation, Ricardo Rodríguez.
