Citma establishes soil protection program

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma) in Holguin province is making progress in reforestation and soil protection projects. As part of the achievements of that territory on the occasion of June 5th, an international day dedicated to commemorate this event.

Geovanny Zaldívar Martínez, Citma’s sub-delegate, told CNA that the territory has a forest coverage of 38.5 percent with more than 391 hectares (ha) covered and preservation programs are being implemented in priority watersheds, mountain ecosystems and agricultural areas.

In addition, more than 1,000 hectares have been recovered in mining areas, one of the measures aimed at reducing environmental degradation by promoting the natural regeneration of pinus cubensis and the region’s own fauna populations.

He indicated that in the area of agriculture, international projects financed by the World Food Program and other organizations are being implemented to make donations of technologies and inputs to improve local food production feasible.

Zaldívar Martínez said that territorial strategies are also being implemented in the province as a way to expand the development of mountain ecosystems. Taking into account the care of biodiversity and sustainable agricultural practices, including the use of natural fertilizers.

The executive highlighted the elimination of invasive exotic species in forested areas, such as Marabú and Casuarina, through the establishment of nurseries to propagate autochthonous specimens, and the extension of demonstration polygons in the municipalities of Banes and Gibara.

Soil desertification and degradation are among the main environmental problems in Holguin province where management plans adapted to improve these conditions and promote resilient ecological niches are being implemented.
