Through a comprehensive care approach, Cuba is reinforcing its fight against Arterial Hypertension (AHT). A silent disease with a prevalence of 37.3 percent of the population. According to the Statistical Yearbook of the Ministry of Public Health (Minsap).
At the primary health care level, efforts are made to detect people with a family history of HT and to identify risk factors.
In this regard, the role of the National Program for the Control of HT and the implementation of the “HEARTS Initiative” are essential strategies to improve control of the disease at the population level.
Similarly, educational activities led by health institutions are important to promote healthy lifestyles to prevent hypertension. Such as a healthy diet, frequent exercise to avoid obesity. As well as reducing the consumption of salt, fats and sugars and avoiding the consumption of tobacco and alcohol.
Likewise, health experts recommend measuring blood pressure regularly and promoting awareness of the fact that everyone is at risk of suffering from hypertension.
According to data published by Minsap, between 50 and 60 percent of Cubans over 15 years of age are prehypertensive or hypertensive. A figure that exceeds five million inhabitants.
Hypertension is the main preventable risk factor for cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and renal diseases. Also in the Caribbean island, these cause approximately 41,000 deaths per year, 45% of which are related to high systolic blood pressure.
