The Provincial Center of Plastic Arts of Holguin continues with the celebration of a whole day of homage for the 90th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Mexican muralist, sculptor, painter and poet Electa Arenal Huerta, who left an indelible mark in the artistic field of this province.
The commemorative program is developed with the intention of extolling the legacy of Arenal, whose influence extends beyond the borders of Mexico.
On this occasion, the Museo Provincial La Periquera was the chosen scenario for a special conversation that revolved around his emblematic mural “Revolución Cubana”, located in this iconic center of the city’s historical heritage.
The meeting, which is part of the commemorative activities that have been taking place since May 16th, was attended by sculptor Lauro Hechavarría as guest of honor.
During the conversation, Hechavarría shared details about the mural’s execution process. As well as the techniques and materials used by the artist to bring the work to life.
The event also counted on the initial intervention of Dr.C Yuricel Moreno Zaldívar, director of the Provincial Center of Plastic Arts Holguin. Photo: Courtesy of this institution
Regarding the reason for the day of homage to Electa Arenal Huerta in Holguin, Yuricel Moreno Zaldivar, director of the Holguin Provincial Center of Plastic Arts, shared details:
“The day starts from the need to highlight Electa Arenal Huerta’s trajectory and legacy, her contribution to Cuban art and her commitment to social causes. Activities like this one will be extended to other times of the year. Although in this first stage it will be until June 12th, the 55th anniversary of her death”.
This type of event was based on the experience the institution had in 2019 with the event: Looking for Electa, a proposal by the late artist Ramiro Ricardo to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death, with a great journey between Mexico and Holguin with various activities.
According to Moreno Zaldívar, this year it is not an ambitious day like that one, but it is very opportune to keep alive the idea of celebrating the figure of Electa and to make known her work through actions that promote the legacy she left us both in the province of Holguin and in the north of the province of Las Tunas.
This first part of the tribute day is followed by other activities such as the unveiling of new panels. One at the Mario Díaz Legrá Polyclinic and another at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin Hospital. Where there are several murals that Electa painted for public institutions.
Likewise, a third tile will be inaugurated in the group of buildings that were part of the urban reform of the city and that are located in the block of Cuba, Garayalde, Mendieta and Victoria Streets, and whose balconies are decorated with doves made with mosaics designed and made by Electa Arenal.
The director of the Provincial Center of Plastic Arts Holguin also pointed out that this event is thought as a whole program to bring Electa’s work and her figure closer to the community, to the public that interacts directly with her art.
Likewise, the second part of the tribute will take place in October during the Ibero-American Culture Festival with the presentation of an art book and the linking of his sculptural work and imprint in the province.
This series of activities not only celebrates an exceptional artist, but also seeks to inspire new generations to recognize and value the impact of art in society.
