Cuba bets on new technologies for sugar production

The National Innovation Council analyzed in it’s most recent session the use of new technologies. To increase sugar production and it’s derivatives, in the presence of President Miguel Díaz-Canel.

This proposal, presented by the Azcuba Sugar Group, seeks to increase income from exports. Which would make possible the growth of the sector with the consequent contribution to the economy of the Caribbean country.

In this regard, the President considered as strategic the implementation plan of the project to reverse the current situation of the industry and proposed to add “all the ideas that can strengthen it and make it viable in the shortest possible time”.

Azcuba’s vice-president, Mariela Gallardo, explained at the meeting the importance of a strategic plan in this area based on the implementation of technological, financial and organizational innovations.

Gallardo recalled that sugarcane, the mainstay of the Cuban sugar industry, had a downward trend in it’s production levels and has experienced a progressive erosion in the industry.

In this sense, she emphasized the relevance of finding ways for the economic-financial support that would allow the sustainability and growth of sugar production.

According to the Presidency of the Republic, the board stressed that it is important to resize the sugar industry. Which is present in 50 municipalities in the country.

He also delved into the challenges and strengths of the strategy presented. As well as the possibility of the sugar industry recovering it’s role as a contributor of foreign exchange to the national economy.

Dr. Jorge Núñez pointed out that it must take into account the transformation of the communities where the agro-sugar industry is developed.
