Scientists implant chip that blocks the desire to drink alcohol

Fuyang People’s Hospital successfully implanted a chip to stop drinking alcohol in a patient with 22 years of addiction. Naltrexone reduced cravings in just four hours, preventing alcohol relapse.

In China, a 40-year-old man with more than 20 years of alcohol addiction became the protagonist of an impressive medical breakthrough. He received a subcutaneous implant that, in just four hours, completely eliminated his desire to drink alcohol.

The operation was performed at the Fuyang People’s Hospital, Anhui province, and marked the beginning of a new era in the treatment of addictions.

How does it work?

It involves the insertion of a chip (without electronic components) composed of extended-release naltrexone hydrochloride. A drug that acts directly on the brain’s receptors, blocking the pleasure caused by alcohol.

The surgery is quick and simple: in less than five minutes and under local anesthesia, doctors implant 10 microcapsules in the patient’s abdomen, each the size of a soybean. This method saves the patient from having to remember to take daily medication and minimizes the likelihood of relapse.

A clinical trial conducted between 2023 and 2024 by the Second Xiangya Hospital and other institutions in China showed that this treatment significantly improves consumption control in chronic alcoholics, without serious side effects.

The chip acts as a chemical blockade: by not feeling pleasure from alcohol consumption, the patient’s brain loses the desire to drink. It’s that clear. A revolutionary breakthrough that opens a new window of hope for millions of people struggling with alcoholism.
