The cyclonic season is approaching and the national meteorological service has highly qualified professionals and information technologies. To follow up on the trajectory and evolution of any tropical cyclone that represents a threat to Cuba, down to the smallest detail.
The Institute of Meteorology (Insmet in the Spanish acronym) generally has 68 stations for carrying out measurements and punctual observations of meteorological parameters. Through the use of the appropriate instruments in order to establish the corresponding atmospheric behavior.
Its operating infrastructure includes specialized centers, among them Climate, Informatics and Communications, Forecasts, Physics and Chemistry of the Atmosphere, Instruments and Methods of Observation, Agricultural and Marine Meteorology, Radars and 14 provincial centers. Including the special municipality of the Isla de la Juventud.
Specialists in the sector also pointed out that since 1996. It is one of the few institutions in the region that issues its own seasonal forecasts, statistical synoptic methods, to predict the behavior of cyclonic activity.
In addition, the experience and strength of the Civil Defense System has been nationally and internationally recognized since its inception as a guarantee for the preservation of lives and the conservation of economic and natural resources in the event of natural or technological disasters.
In this sense, in 1986 the Meteoro Exercise began, directed by its National General Staff with the objective of preparing the management bodies and the population for catastrophic situations during the cyclonic season, from June 1st to November 30th in the Atlantic basin.
According to Insmet, the 2025 cyclonic season in the North Atlantic will be active, and the formation of 15 tropical cyclones is forecast. Eight of which may reach hurricane category.
The danger of Cuba being affected by at least one hurricane is 50% probability. Higher than the climatological danger for the country, which is 35%.
