For several days, high temperatures have been part of the daily life of Holguin residents. An issue that health authorities in the territory warn about.
According to statements made by Dr. Yanelis Calviño Vega, head of the Health Surveillance Department of the General Directorate of the sector (DGS), with summer approaching. It is advisable to comply with a series of measures aimed at preventing the effects of extreme heat.
“With such high temperatures, it is necessary to protect oneself from the sun and avoid exposure to it between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
As ultraviolet radiation increases the risk of skin cancer,” she urged.
She also added that these measures should be accompanied by drinking plenty of fluids. “We have to protect ourselves with light clothes, as dark colors cause greater thermal sensation. We must also ventilate our homes, open the doors and windows, as well as our study and work places”, especially when the electric service is affected.
Another element to take into account is to ensure food safety in order to prevent outbreaks of digestive diseases. In this regard, the specialist in Hygiene and Epidemiology also explained that “with high temperatures, food decomposes more easily and there is a greater risk of bacterial proliferation”.
She also suggested paying special attention to those who are most vulnerable to these situations: children and adults.
Health specialists agree that high temperatures can cause effects that damage human integrity. Such as sunstroke, fainting, dehydration, skin diseases or heat stroke.
